The Charlotte Straker Project Trust
When the NHS closed the cottage hospital in the Northumberland village of Corbridge a group of local people formed the Charlotte Straker Project Trust to transform it into a much-needed facility. Enough money was raised to completely refurbish the old cottage hospital, with four renovated flats on the first floor, state-of-the-art nursing beds on the ground floor and eight sheltered housing bungalows in the gardens. Now with 31 ensuite rooms it provides a home for the elderly and frail who are no longer able or do not wish to live alone, due to physical disability and residents are from a mixed background of private and social service funding. Inability to pay is not a barrier and residential, nursing, respite and palliative care are all offered.
The Charlotte Straker Project enjoys widespread support from the local community and benefits from integrating extensive volunteer support into all its activities. It’s a model of what local people can do to meet a need in their own community. https://charlottestraker.org.uk/
Support in establishing similar initiatives across the country will be high on InvestAge’s investment and loan priorities and our co-operative structure will facilitate action groups to start and run comparable projects.
